‘Dirty Dancing’ Remake Causes Controversy on the Web

Photo: Everett CollectionThe dance movie from 1987 starred the late Patrick Swayze as dance instructor Johnny Castle, and a very young Jennifer Grey who played Baby, a guest at a summer resort who falls for teacher.

The story was set in the Catskills in the 1960s. But the movie has since become a timeless classic: The cheesy dance numbers, Patrick Swayze's smooth moves -- on and off the dance floor -- and his unforgettable line, "Nobody puts Baby in a corner" cemented the film in the memories of a generation of kids from the 1980s.

So it's not surprising that a storm of controversy would quickly follow plans to remake the movie. Searches on the Web immediately spiked on "dirty dancing remake" and "dirty dancing remake cast."

Fans of the original bemoaned the news on Yahoo!. Typical comments: "Please do not remake this movie!" And this: "There is no one that could replace Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey and I mean no one." And a third: "There will never be another 'Dirty Dancing' as good as the original. I think it will do a great dis-service to Patrick Swayze by remaking this film. You can't improve on perfection." Another called the original an "American icon of romance."

But not everyone sounded so incensed. For one, "Dancing with the Stars" judge Carrie Ann Inaba jumped at the chance to have her say on casting, suggesting Jennifer Grey's pro partner from season 10, Derek Hough. And for Baby: Her vote is for Lea Michele from "Glee."

But perhaps the most unlikely show of support came from the original Baby, Jennifer Grey. The now 51-year-old actress and season 10 "DWTS" winner took to Twitter to voice her approval: "I love @Kennyortega and trust that he will do something special #DirtyDancingRemake."

Like we said: Nobody puts Baby in a corner.

Jennifer Grey probably thinks that they may call her in for some sort of advice or something and feels like she may make some money.

hollywood wants to remake it because nobody out there has an original idea. how many more stupid super hero movies do we need to see, planet of the apes, fright night, dirty dancing the list goes on and on.

They are running out of ideas this movie is a classic and they shouldn't touch it, I liked Dirty Dancing and its a great way to remember the late great Patrick Swayze. God they already ruined Karate Kid and now they are ruining more classics if they even touch any Hughes moves like Breakfast Club or Ferris Bular or Blazing Saddles and remake to be more "racially" friendly I know this country has finally fallen because you don't touch a classic like those!

if they try to remake any of John Huges films they may have the equivalent to Londons recent riots in there hands. There are to many Huges fans fro them to not get absolutly furious at even the hint of a remake

What's the point of remaking this movie anyway? What are they going to do,make it young and hip with hip hop stars?? Why not remake all the movies that were made in the last 10 years? Why stop there? Let's remake Showgirls or Howard the Duck and Back to the Future. Why do the young people now need to go see something that's a remake when they can watch the original? Because it's too old for them?

Filmmaking always improves and things change. Kids aren't into Swayze. We are in the midst of a re-make phase is all. It will end.

Would "they" remake Gone With The Wind? NO, because the origional simply can not be remade.. leave the great movies alone!
      • tim 9 months ago
Please dont tell me you are comparing Dirty Dancing with Gone With The Wind. That is just rediculous
      • Elisa 9 months ago
Who knows, they probably would remake Gone with the Wind, maybe even The Wizard of Oz and a "re-telling" of The Sound of Music (minus the music and changing of the title).

Great... You just gave them a new idea on a remake.

Hollywood couldn't conjure up a new, creative idea and I will continue not to pay to see movies until they put out a new, fresh product. Hollywood is tired, old and quite frankly, downright boring.

chek out cowboys and aliens thats a new concept

        ... and overpaid ...

A little extreme, sure a re make here or there, but had lotsa good others. Transformers, Resident Evil, th Harry Potter series, Captain America, Thor, I could go on and on.

It is soooo true. There is noway, that any remake of this movie could do any justice. Patrick Swayze, was and always will be, the only possible person to play his role as well as Grey, for babys role. Swayze is an icon. So missed, by so many.

I for one will not give one penny to that remake!! The whole thing is a disgrace to the original!!
    • Letisia C  •  9 months ago
they shouldn't be allowed to re make it ! they already ruined it with dirty dancing havana nights. why not just accept the fact u made an awesome movie and move on . i hate it when they reamke good old movies and songs. it would be as bad as jessica simpson remaking take my brethe away !

Don't touch Dirty dancing at all. New Ideas people
    • Wyld  •  9 months ago
Ain't nothing like the real thing!! A re-make would be an insult. Patrick and Jennifer made that movie a hit, and NO ONE can do it justice with a re-make.
    • Football Fan  •  9 months ago
Leave the original alone. Re-release that one! No One could ever replace that cast!
    • got adobo  •  9 months ago
This lame effort will turn out just as ineffective as Karate Kid....but, hell yeah, go ahead and spend the money, what else can ya do when no one can come up with an original idea..
    • K.  •  9 months ago
I"m so tired of them trying to re-ignite the magic of the movies of the 80's. Please stop. Leave them alone... from Karate Kid to Footloose to Dirty Dancing... STOP trying to remake something that was perfect in the day and age that it was created. You will FAIL. And you will disappoint a lot of fans of the Great Originals.

Yes, I agree... find some new ideas... find a new imagination... create a new story. Stop rehashing what was and create a new path!

NO ONE SHOULD EVER REMAKE THIS MOVIE!!!!
    • Julie  •  9 months ago
Seriously Carrie Ann?! Both Derek and Lea are SO over-exposed right now...that would surely tank the film. I think it's a lousy idea--sorry. You won't change my mind on that.
