1974 – Academy Award winner Penélope Cruz was born on this day in Madrid, Spain. Cruz started her impressive film career at the age of 18 and quickly became a critical darling on the international circuit. It was only a matter of time before America discovered her talents. Soon the Academy took note as well and she became the first Spanish star to be nominated for a best actress Oscar for her work in Pedro Almodóvar ‘s “Volver” (2006). Though she didn’t win, Cruz would eventually earn a supporting actress Oscar for her brilliant comedic performance in Woody Allen's "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" (2008).
