Jo Van Fleet, 'East of Eden' (Best Supporting Actress, 1955) Jo Van Fleet won for her only career nomination. In the film based on the famous John Steinbeck novel, she plays Kate, the sinister mother of Cal (James Dean). She's presumed dead, but it's revealed that she's running a brothel in a neighboring town. A TV miniseries adaptation in 1981 won Jane Seymour a Golden Globe for the same role.
