Sundance Selects Takes U.S. On Lea Seydoux’s ‘Blue Is The Warmest Color’
Sundance Selects has acquired U.S. rights from Wild Bunch to Abdellatif Kechiche’s “Blue Is the Warmest Color,” starring Lea Seydoux and Adele Exarchopoulos, following its world premiere in competition at Cannes.
The French-language drama was produced by Alcatraz Films, Quat’Sous Films and Wild Bunch.
Story centers on a 15-year-old girl who dreams of finding the love of her life and meets a handsome stranger who falls for her. But before romance begins, she imagines a mysterious, blue-haired girl she encountered in the street slips into her bed — and she can no longer deny her true desires.
Justin Chang gave the film a positive review for Variety at Cannes: “It’s a simple, even predictable story, yet textured so exquisitely and acted so forcefully as to feel almost revelatory.”
Sundance Selects’ sister label IFC Films previously released Kechiche’s “The Secret of the Grain,” which won the Cesar Award for film and director. He also directed “Games of Love and Chance,” “Black Venus” and “Poetical Refugee.”
It was the second deal at Cannes between Sundance Selects and Wild Bunch. Sundance Selects announced on May 19 that it had bought U.S. rights to Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne’s upcoming drama “Two Days, One Night,” starring Marion Cotillard, Fabrizio Rongione and Olivier Gourmet.
The deal for “Blue” was negotiated by Arianna Bocco for Sundance Selects/IFC Films with Carole Baraton at Wild Bunch on behalf of the filmmakers.
