Rathergate Drama ‘Truth’ Gets October 16 Release Date From Sony Classics

Truth, the upcoming film based on the 2004 “Rathergate” scandal from Sony Pictures Classics, now has a release date aimed to prime the film for consideration during awards season. The pic starring Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett will hit select theaters in New York and Los Angeles on October 16, with wide release to follow.

“Rathergate” refers to the drama surrounding the story, reported by Mary Mapes and Dan Rather for CBS, that President George W. Bush might have been AWOL from his service in the National Guard for over a year during the height of the Vietnam War. Encapsulating perhaps the final time longer wounds from the Vietnam War would impact U.S. elefctoral politics, the news rocked the contentious 2004 presidential race, coming just as Democratic candidate John Kerry was facing accusations of falsehoods about his own military service. Very quickly, the authenticity of primary documents obtained for the report was called into question by several experts, ultimately leading to the the discrediting of the entire story. In the ensuing fallout, Mapes was fired and Rather forced into retirement.

The film is based on the book Truth And Duty, Mapes’ accounting of the affair, and will follow the course of the story from its origins to the point that it nearly took down CBS. Blanchett stars as Mapes, with Redford portraying Rather. Written and directed by James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, White House Down), it’s produced by Bradley Fischer (Shutter Island, Black Swan) and William Sherak from Mythology Entertainment, Doug Mankoff and Andy Spaulding from Echo Lake Entertainment, and Brett Ratner of RatPac Entertainment.

The mid-October date is already a packed one, most recently joined by Lenny Abrahamson’s Toronto-bound Room starring Brie Larson. Also set for October 16: Steven Spielberg’s Bridge Of Spies, Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak and Sony/Columbia’s The Bronze.
