Bright summer days call for dark summer movies. Sometimes we'd rather pull the shades than put on the shades. If you would like to escape the sunshine for a while, check out these five soon to be released flicks.
"Dark Shadows" -- May 11
This movie is inspired by the 1960s cult classic afternoon TV series by the same name. The show came out long before Goth was trendy, even inspiring its own line of trading cards.
Now, some of the most popular names in Hollywood are bringing the program back to life for 2012. The gothic cast is led by Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Eva Green. If you're into vampires, this flick will be a bloody good pick.
"Chernobyl Diaries" -- May 25
You won't get much UV sitting in a movie theater, but you will be exposed to plenty of radiation by association as a group of six tourists on an extreme guide are led through radiation-devastated Pripyat. This city was abandoned 26 years ago when the Chernobyl power plant exploded.
For those travelers interested in touring the remains of this area, it might be safer to just watch actor Jesse McCartney and crew do it. Certain levels of deadly radioactive isotopes are still there today, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency.
"Piranha 3DD" -- June 1
With the frightening increase in early season shark attacks along the coasts of Florida and Australia this year, many people's thoughts have been taken to dangerous waters. You never know what might be lurking beneath the surface, which is why "Piranha 3DD," starring Danielle Panabaker and Ving Rhames, seems so captivating and timely.
It's a good thing former "Baywatch" front man David Hasselhoff is in on this project as a costar as well. When there's a problem in the water, he has the experience to handle it.
"The Apparition" -- August 24
A great back to school movie is one that makes you not want to go back to school. This is especially true if your major requires lots of lab work.
"The Apparition" is about an evil entity summoned in a university lab experiment and seeks out a young couple who had been involved in the project. Ashley Greene, Sebastian Stan, and Tom Felton lead the cast in a movie that proves the adage sometimes the best experiment for the supernatural is the one never conducted.
"The Possession" -- August 31
In this horror film starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick, a young girl is tormented by an evil spirit that lives inside an antique box she picked up at a yard sale. If attendance at flea markets and yard sales is down this year, this movie might be partially to blame.
Fact, however, can be stranger than fiction. "The Possession" is actually based on a true story about a cursed box from WWII purchased on eBay that brought misfortune to anyone who owned it.
These movies should appeal to anyone looking forward to a sinister summer. Whatever you fear the most, you may be forced to confront it. The list includes evil entities, radiation, man-eating fish, vampires, and demons inside antique boxes. What a great summer this is going to be!
