Sarah Michelle Gellar Joins ‘Star Wars Rebels’ for Season 2

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is headed to a galaxy far, far away.

Sarah Michelle Gellar has joined Season 2 of Disney XD’s animated adventure series “Star Wars Rebels.” Executive producer Dave Filoni discussed the casting news on Tuesday with advertising clients convened at Lucasfilm’s San Francisco headquarters for Disney Media Sales and Marketing’s presentations, just hours after the Season 1 finale had premiered.

Best known for battling demons on The WB/UPN’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” the actress will now voice a recurring character on the 3D CGI animated “Star Wars” series, focusing on the early years of the Rebel Alliance’s attempts to overthrow the Empire.

Gellar has lent her voice to animated series before, including American Dad, “The Simpsons” and 14 episodes of Adult Swim’s “Robot Chicken.” In addition to starring on “Buffy” for seven seasons, she was the lead on The CW drama “Ringer.”

More recently, she starred opposite Robin Williams on CBS’s “The Crazy Ones.” Her major feature film credits include “I Know What You Did last Summer, “Cruel Intentions,” the “Scooby-Doo” films, among others.

ICM Partners, Markham, Froggatt and Irwin and Brillstein Entertainment represent Gellar.

“We’re thrilled to have Sarah Michelle Gellar on board for season two. She is a true ‘Star Wars Rebels’ fan and her passion undoubtedly comes through in the voice recording sessions,” Filoni said in a statement to TheWrap.

Several stars of George Lucas‘ earlier films have made guest voice appearances, including James Earl Jones as Darth Vader, Frank Oz as Yoda, and most recently,Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian. Among the other notable voice stars are Freddie Prinze Jr. as Kanan and “Selma” actor David Oyelowo as Agent Kallus. As TheWrap previously reported, Season 2 will also feature recurring appearances by legendary villain Darth Vader.

“Star Wars Rebels” debuted with strong ratings last October, drawing 1.03 million total viewers for its premiere episode — making it the top animated series premiere in Disney XD’s 15 year-plus history.
