Ryan Reynolds and “The Killing” star Mireille Enos play two desperate parents searching for their daughter while being monitored by the kidnappers in the first trailer for “Captives,” which was announced as part of the Cannes Film Festival main competition on Thursday.

The thriller, directed by Atom Egoyan (“Chloe”) co-stars Scott Speedman, Rosario Dawson, Bruce Greenwood and Kevin Durand.

It marks Reynolds’ return to more serious fare after numerous attempts to become a blockbuster superhero (“X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” “Green Lantern”) didn't work out in his favor, and “R.I.P.D.” bombed hard in theaters last summer.

Reynolds reverted back to smaller scale films earlier this year with “The Voices,” a psychological thriller directed by Iranian filmmaker Marjane Satrapi (“Persepolis”), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival before being acquired by Lionsgate.

Further down the pipeline, Reynolds will be seen in director Tarsem Singh's sci-fi “Selfless” and gambling drama “Mississippi Grind.”
