Peter Docter Is Well Aware Of Inside Out’s Major Plot Hole

‘Inside Out’ has well and truly reminded movie fans just how powerful Pixar can be at their best. Not only is it stunningly beautiful to look at, but it’s also emotional, funny, and so supremely plotted and intoxicated that you’re devastated when it abruptly comes to an end.

But there’s just one problem with the film: there is a huge plot hole. Of course, if you haven’t seen ‘Inside Out’ you probably shouldn’t read ahead, as it could ruin this joyous experience for you.

Once Joy and Sadness are sent to long-term memory they then must safely transport the core memories back to headquarters in order to make Riley the positive girl they’ve always loved.

But rather than traveling through the labyrinth that is Riley’s mind to bring the core memories back, Joy could simply have just sent them there in the same fashion that the commercial jingle made its way to the headquarters.

When presented with this information by Rope Of Silicon, director and writer Peter Docter admitted that this had been overlooked during the creation of ‘Inside Out’.

“We discussed that along the way and it was one of those things where we kind of boxed ourselves in a corner a little bit,” Docter explained, before adding, “We added the recall thing later, when they were doing the song that got stuck in her head.”

But, after the fact, Docter has now devised the perfect explanation for the plot hole. “Our argument was that Joy wouldn’t trust the memories would be fine on their own, she needed to be up there too,” Docter insisted.

Despite this slight issue, ‘Inside Out’ is still widely regarded as one of the best movies of 2015, while it’s also seen as stunning return to form for the studio after several years of mediocre output. In fact, it’s already been compared to the brilliance of Toy Story, Toy Story 3, Wall-E, Ratatouille, The Incredibles and Finding Nemo.

Still, now that this problem has been uncovered, unfortunately ‘Inside Out’ will never be quite as remarkable as everyone originally thought. It’s still pretty incredible though.
