Richard Linklater’s Baseball Pic Replaces ‘Bad Moms’ In Paramount’s 2016 Lineup
Paramount Pictures has set a release date for Richard Linklater’s follow-up to his Oscar-nominated Boyhood. The baseball comedy, formerly titled That’s What I’m Talking About, will bow on April 15, 2016. That’s the date formerly held by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore’s R-rated comedy Bad Moms, which now had been undated following the departures last month of star Leslie Mann and producer Judd Apatow.
Bad Moms, from The Hangover team, was to star Mann as an overworked and exhausted mother who joins forces with two other “bad moms” to challenge the helicopter parents that rule over their kids’ school. But Apatow and Mann, who are married and wanted to do the project together, couldn’t make the scheduling work and pulled out last month. At the time, the plan was to keep the movie going full speed ahead, casting up to stay on its summer start date. This was the first big project for Bill Block since forming Block Entertainment with Raj Brinder Singh’s Merced Capital and Kevin Frakes’ PalmStar Media Capital. No word on a new date yet, or whether the pause means Paramount and Mann-Apatow are angling for a schedule that will allow the latter the flexibility to return to the project. (UPDATE: Now hearing that Mann and Apatow are not in the mix to return.)
Linklater’s movie stars Blake Jenner as an incoming freshman experiencing his first weekend in college as a pitcher on the school’s nationally ranked team. The setting is 1980, and the guys step into the freedom and responsibility of unsupervised adulthood. The film also stars Teen Wolf‘s Tyler Hoechlin, 22 Jump Street and This Is 40‘s Wyatt Russell, Ryan Guzman, Zoey Deutch (Good Kids), A Teacher‘s Will Brittain, and Glen Powell, who is coming off The Expendables 3 and Ride Along 2. Annapurna Pictures is backing it and selling foreign rights.
