OSCARS: ‘Japanese Dog’ to Represent Romania at Academy Awards
LONDON — Romania has selected Tudor Cristian Jurgiu’s “The Japanese Dog” as its entry in the race for the foreign-language film Oscar.
Jurgiu’s feature debut stars Victor Rebengiuc as an old man who has lost his wife and all his possessions in a flood. The tragedy prompts the return of his son (Serban Pavlu), who has lived in Japan for many years, accompanied by his Japanese wife and son. The old man and his son have drifted apart, and must now piece together their relationship.
In his review for Variety, Jay Weissberg complimented the film for its “understatement and a beguiling sensitivity.” The work of d.o.p. Andrei Butica (“The Death of Mr. Lazarescu,” “Child’s Pose”) was also praised.
Berlin-based M-Appeal is handled international sales on the film.
The pic was selected for the Oscar race by a committee that comprising film critics Eugenia Voda, Magda Mihailescu, Cristina Corciovescu, Dana Duma, Irina Margareta Nistor and Iulia Blaga, and Transylvania Film Festival artistic director Mihai Chirilov.
The deadline for submitting foreign-language candidates is Oct. 1. The nominations will be announced Jan. 15 and the awards will be held Feb. 22 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
