‘Ninja Turtles’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Split Top Disc Sales Honors
Paramount scored top-selling disc honors the week ended Sept. 25 with “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows,” while Walt Disney Studios snagged the top spot on the Blu-ray Disc-only sales chart with its 25th anniversary edition of “Beauty and the Beast.”
“Beauty” debuted at No. 3 on NPD VideoScan’s overall disc sales charts, which tracks combined Blu-ray Disc and DVD sales. “Out of the Shadows,” the sequel to the 2014 “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” remake, debuted at No. 2 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart.
“Out of the Shadows” grossed $82 million, less than half what the original earned in U.S. theaters. “Beauty,” available only as a Blu-ray Disc combo back (with DVD and digital copy), was the third most-successful film of 1991, topped only by the summer hits “Terminator 2: Judgment Day”and “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.”
“Captain America: Civil War,” also distributed on home video by Disney, slipped to No. 2 on the overall disc sales chart and No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc chart.
Rounding out the top five, on both sales charts, were two new releases from Universal Pictures: the comedy “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” at No. 4 and “Free State of Jones” at No. 5.
“Sorority Rising” stars Seth Rogen and Zac Efron as hapless neighbors to a wild sorority (in the original “Neighbors,” it was a fraternity). The film earned $55.3 million in U.S. theaters, compared to more than $150 million for the 2014 original.
“Free State of Jones” ($20.8 million) is a historical drama starring Matthew McConaughey as a Confederate Army deserter who leads an uprising against a corrupt local government.
NPD research shows that “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” generated 68% of its total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc, compared to 51% for “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” and 45% for “The Free State of Jones.”
On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” debuted at No. 1 while Universal Pictures’ “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” shot up to No. 2 now that its 28-day holdback from Redbox has ended.
Lionsgate’s “Now You See Me 2,” the previous week’s top rental, slipped to No. 3, while the No. 4 spot went to another film that has just become available on Redbox, “The Nice Guys,” from Warner.
Rounding out the top five on the rental chart was “Captain America: Civil War,” which had debuted the prior week at No. 4.
