‘Minions’ Hits $1 Billion at Worldwide Box Office
Universal-Illumination Entertainment’s “Minions” has crossed the $1 billion milestone at the worldwide box office — another indication of a dominant year for the studio.
It’s the third milestone of the week for Universal, which set a record for top domestic year on Aug. 26 with $2.113 billion and for top international year on Aug. 24 with $3.78 billion.
The animated comedy has grosses of $682 million internationally and $321.9 million in North America, making Minions” the third-highest-grossing animated film of all time after “Frozen” and “Toy Story 3.” It’s the 23rd film to gross $1 billion worldwide.
Universal noted that the milestone also marks the first time any studio has had three films cross $1 billion at the worldwide box office in a single year. “Furious 7” has grossed $1.512 billion and “Jurassic World” has grossed $1.628 billion — and it’s still in theaters.
With “Minions,” Illumination’s five releases — including “Despicable Me,” “Hop,” “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax” and “Despicable Me 2” — have grossed more than $3 billion worldwide altogether.
“Minions” is also is the highest-grossing animated title of all time in 11 territories — Hungary, Indonesia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Philippines, Russia, Slovakia, Thailand, Ukraine, U.A.E. and Vietnam — and Universal’s highest-grossing film of all time in France, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia and Slovakia.
“Minions” opens Friday in Italy, followed by Turkey on Sept. 4, China on Sept. 13 and Greece on Sept. 24.
