Michael Shannon Joins Jessica Lange in Broadway ‘Long Day’s Journey’

Michael Shannon has signed on to the upcoming Broadway revival of “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” joining a cast that already includes Jessica Lange, Gabriel Byrne and John Gallagher Jr.

Oscar nominee Shannon (“Revolutionary Road,” “Man of Steel,” “Boardwalk Empire”) was last on Broadway in 2012 play “Grace,” and his numerous Off Broadway credits include “Bug,” “Uncle Vanya,” “Our Town” and “Killer Joe.” In “Long Day’s Journey,” he’ll appear as James Tyrone Jr., the elder of the two sons in the Tyrone family.

British director Jonathan Kent (“Faith Healer,” “Hamlet” with Ralph Fiennes) directs the revival of Eugene O’Neill’s landmark 1956 drama, which brings Lange back to Broadway for the first time in more than a decade. The actress will play the mother of Shannon’s character, while Byrne portrays his father and Gallagher Jr. (“Spring Awakening”) appears as his younger brother.

Produced by the Roundabout Theater Company with Ryan Murphy (who’s worked with Lange on “American Horror Story”), “Long Day’s Journey” is part of a starry 50th anniversary season for Roundabout that also includes Clive Owen in “Old Times,” Keira Knightley in “Therese Raquin” and Josh Radnor in “She Loves Me.” Roundabout has had a long history of producing O’Neill plays, with titles including “Anna Christie,” which starred Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson in 1993, and “A Touch of the Poet,” which starred Byrne in 2005.

Shannon juggles his appearance in “Long Day’s Journey” with screen work in upcoming titles such as “Freeheld,” the Julianne Moore-Ellen Page drama premiering at Toronto, as well as Warner Herzog’s “Salt and Fire” and Siofra Campbell’s “The Price,” both of which are currently in production.

“Long Day’s Journey Into Night” begins previews March 31, 2016, ahead of an April 19 opening at the American Airlines Theater. Prior to that, the theater will host Roundabout productions of “Old Times” as well as comedy “Noises Off.”
