When Magic City returns to Starz this summer, it will make ample use of the recent addition to its cast.
James Caan, returning to his Godfather roots, joins the sophomore drama as Chicago gangster Sy Berman. And the first trailer for the new episodes shows him casting a formidable shadow over Ike Evans (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Miami kingpin Ben "The Butcher" Diamond (Danny Huston).
"Last season, Ben Diamond was basically the great white shark of crime," creator and EP Mitch Glazer told the crowd at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on Jan. 5. "But from all of my research, the way the mob worked back in those days, you always answered to someone."
That someone is Caan. And Glazer noted that when he settled on bringing in a bigger shark than Ben, he wrote the part with the actor in mind.
"I wrote it for him and begged him to come in and do it," he said. "It gave me a chance to show where the Butcher came from and how he became who he became."
Caan said that he was only halfheartedly looking for another TV gig when the offer came through.
"I read a lot of scripts this year just to make believe that I was busy," said Caan. "I was also promised that I would have three or four love scenes, and of course they lied."
From the looks of it, sex continues to play a big part in Magic City -- as does Ike's family, who Morgan says his character drifts farther away from in the new season.
"This whole season breaks down to him wanting to rid himself of Ben and eventually Sy," said Morgan, "but he manages to pit those two against each other in a way. ... I've got a lot of balls in the air."
Another ball is Fidel Castro. The then newly elected Cuban prime minister, who had yet to cut his ties to American partnerships in the show's 1959 time period, looks like a would-be ally for Ike.
"I love dealing with the nexus of the mafia, Castro and this family," said Glazer.
