‘Les Miserables’ Barricades Back at Broadway’s Imperial
Turns out you can go home again: The incoming Broadway revival of “Les Miserables” will open next spring at the Imperial Theater, the venue where the original Rialto production played for more than 12 years.
“Les Mis” returns to Gotham after the property got an international publicity boost late last year from the film version and its heavy presence in the subsequent awards race. The upcoming incarnation, a different staging from the original that’s still running in London, is a new production of the title’s 25th anniversary touring version, directed by Laurence Connor and James Powell.
No casting has yet been set for the Broadway revival. Another new staging of the 25th anniversary production, set to open in Toronto in the fall, will star Ramin Karimloo as protag Jean Valjean.
Current occupant of the Imperial, “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” is set to shutter June 15, with the return of Billy Crystal solo outing “700 Sundays” already lined up for a limited run Nov. 13-Jan. 5.
“Les Mis” moves back into the Imperial — where the original production moved in 1990 after opening in 1987 at the Broadway Theater — next spring, starting previews March 1 ahead of a March 23 opening.
