Korea Box Office: ‘Rogue Nation’ Enjoys Franchise Best Opening in Big Weekend
Following appearances in Seoul by Tom Cruise and opening on 1,200 screens, “Rogue Nation” earned the “Mission: Impossible” franchise’s best ever opening in Korea. It scooped $16.9 million from 2.46 million admissions over its opening four days.
(“Ghost Protocol” in 2011 opened with $11.4 million in four days and earned a $49.59 million total in Korea.)
Korean period actioner, “Assassination” slipped to second place, with a week-on-week drop of 37% and scored $10.7 million from 1.55 million admissions between Friday and Sunday. The Showbox release now stands on a total of $43.9 million from 6.57 million admissions after two weekends on release, making it the highest grossing local title of the year.
UPI’s “Minions” debuted in third place, earning $6.43 million from 1.02 million admissions over first five days, marking the year’s best opening score for an animated film. “Despicable Me 2,” totalled $5.67 million from 962,900 admissions in 2013.
With a week-on-week drop of 54%, Pixar’s “Inside Out” added $2.16 million between Friday and Sunday to extend its total to $26.9 million after four weeks. Another animated feature “You Are So Yummy-Happy to Be with You” took sixth place, earning $180,000 between Wednesday and Sunday.
Brian Wilson biography “Love & Mercy” opened on Thursday and took eighth spot with $76,200 in four days.
