‘Jurassic World’ Tracking Like ‘Man Of Steel’ – But How Many $100M+ Openings After That In Summer 2015?

Tracking for the next installment in the Universal Pictures franchise Jurassic World came out yesterday, and it looks like it’s heading for a $100 million-$130 million opening, in line with Warner Bros.’ Man Of Steel which opened to $116.6M in the summer of 2013. Man Of Steel ended its domestic run with $291M. From the tracking we are looking at right now, total awareness for the film is in the 90% range and unaided awareness is higher than Warner Bros.’ big disaster movie San Andreas which opens next weekend starring social media giant Dwayne Johnson. Jurassic World, which stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, doesn’t open until June 12 … so early tracking on that is pretty great.

The question, however, is how many more $100M-plus openings might we see this summer after Jurassic World? Mmmaybe one?

“That’s a good question, right? The films that can run the marathon in the summer and have strong legs is how a record summer builds. It’s not about a bunch of impressive debuts, but the staying power of these films,” said Rentrak’s senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “A $100 million debut is sexy, but it does not pay the bills.” He says we still may see a record summer depending how many of the upcoming titles play out.

There are tons of titles on their way and advanced ticket sales just began today for Paramount’s Terminator Genisys — and that doesn’t open until July 1. Titles yet to come that could hit $100M on opening weekend include Universal’s Minions on July 10 (from Illumination) and the wild card Ant-Man from Disney/Marvel on July 17. The Disney/Marvel marketing machine has been pretty successful, but a big question mark remains over this one. Anything else, probably not.

Rentrak shows the box office is up almost 16% over last summer so far (thanks to Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron and Pitch Perfect 2) and 0.79% ahead of the record summer of 2013 at this point in the cycle.
