‘Insurgent,’ ‘Home’ Swap Spots Atop Disc Charts

In a slow week for new releases, Lionsgate’s “Insurgent” and DreamWorks Animation’s “Home” remained in the two top spots on the national home video sales charts for the week ending Aug. 23, although they swapped places.

“Home,” distributed on disc by 20th Century Fox, moved up to No. 1 on the Nielsen VideoScan overall disc sales chart, while “Insurgent,” the sequel to “Divergent,” slipped to No. 2.

Debuting at No. 3 was the “Walt Disney Animation Studios Short Films Collection,” a compilation of a dozen shorts – including “Frozen Forever” and “Lorenzo,” the latter nominated for a Best Animated Short Oscar in 2004 – that’s available only on Blu-ray Disc or as a digital download.

Not surprisingly, the set bowed at No. 1 on Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart, with “Home” and “Insurgent” close behind.

Warner’s “Hot Pursuit” slipped from No. 3 to No. 4 on both charts, while Paramount’s “NCIS: The Twelfth Season” entered the overall disc sales chart at No. 5, suggesting Netflix hasn’t quite killed off the once-lucrative TV-on-disc category, which at one point, in the early 2000s, was generating upwards of $4 billion in annual sales.

On the Blu-ray Disc chart, the No. 5 spot went to a “Divergent/Insurgent” two-pack available only at Walmart stores, which account for more than 40% of the overall disc sales market.

“Insurgent” generated 46% of its week-three sales from Blu-ray Disc, down from 51% in week two and 53% in week one. “Home” generated 35% of its fourth-week sales from Blu-ray Disc,up from 32% the prior week.

On Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart for the week, “Hot Pursuit” took the No. 1 spot, bumping “Insurgent” to No. 2 after the sequel spent two weeks as the country’s top rental.

Warner’s “Get Hard” remained at No. 3, while 20th Century Fox’s “The Longest Ride” dropped two notches to No. 4 and Sony Pictures’ “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2” slipped one position to No. 5.
