GOA – India will be the guest country at the 2013 Cannes festival, the third country after Egypt (2011) and Brazil (2012) to be given this honor.

The announcement was made on behalf of Cannes general delegate Thierry Fremaux by Cannes director of film department Christian Jeune at the ongoing four-day Film Bazaar market in Goa.

The four-day event is organized by India’s National Film Development Corporation which concludes Saturday. Including production and scriptwriting workshops with mentoring sessions, Film Bazaar is being held alongside the International Film Festival of India which runs from Nov. 20-30.

The Cannes spotlight will coincide with Indian cinema celebrating its centenary next year.

Jeune read out a statement by Fremaux which said, “We are pleased to announce that India will be the guest country at the 2013 Cannes film festival. With Indian cinema celebrating 100 years, this would be a good way to mark the celebrations. We are also pleased to make this announcement at the NFDC Film Bazaar and the International Film Festival of India. We are looking forward to welcoming a large delegation from India at Cannes.”
