‘Independence Day,’ ‘Alice’ Sequels Top DVD, Blu-ray Disc Sales Charts

Two summer theatrical features topped the national home video sales chart the week ended Oct. 23, led by 20th Century Fox’s “Independence Day: Resurgence.”

The sci-fi adventure, a belated sequel to 1996’s “Independence Day,” finds the earth once again threatened by an alien invasion. With a domestic box office gross of just $103.1 million, about a third of what the original film earned, “Resurgence” took the No. 1 spot on both the Nielsen VideoScan overall disc sales chart and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

Debuting at No. 2, also on both charts, was Walt Disney’s “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” produced but not directed by Tim Burton, who helmed the 2010 original, “Alice in Wonderland.” The sequel, with returning cast members Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, among others, was also a theatrical disappointment, with a theatrical gross of $77 million – compared to $334.2 million for the first film.

According to NPD data, “Alice” sold 48% as many copies as “Resurgence” during the week.

The arrival of the two new features sent the previous week’s trio of newcomers sliding down the charts, two spots each. Sony Pictures’ “Ghostbusters” remake, which debuted last week at No. 1, slid to No. 3, while Warner’s “The Legend of Tarzan” fell to No. 4 and 20th Century Fox’s “Ice Age: Collision Course” slipped to No. 5.

According to NPD research, “Independence Day: Resurgence” generated 59% of its total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc, compared to 65% for “Alice.”

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, “Ghostbusters” debuted at No. 1, a week after its release, bumping Universal Pictures’ “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” to No. 2.

Another Universal film, “Free State of Jones,” soared to No. 3 now that it’s available at Redbox kiosks after a 28-day holdback.

“Alice Through the Looking Glass” debuted at No. 4.

Rounding out the top five was the Warner horror film “The Conjuring 2.”
