‘Life Of Pi’, Keanu Reeves’ Doc At Plus CameraImage
Plus CameraImage, the International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography, kicks off its 20th anniversary edition this weekend in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Fest opener is Keanu Reeves’ filmmakers documentary Side by Side, followed by the Polish premiere of Ang Lee’s Life of Pi. Reeves and Life of Pi cinematographer Claudio Miranda are scheduled to attend the opening gala. Fest runs November 24 through December 1st. Other attendees include directors David Lynch, director Steven Okazaki, Michael Lindsay-Hogg and film editor Alan Heim. As preveiously reported, Gus Van Sant will accept the Director Duo Award on behalf of his late friend and collaborator Harris Savides.
India To Be Guest Country At Cannes 2013
The Cannes International Film Festival’s 2013 edition will toast the Indian Film Industry in celebration of 100 years of Indian cinema. India will be the third Guest Country at Cannes following Egypt in 2011 and Brazil in 2012. “The Festival de Cannes is delighted to celebrate one of the most important countries in the world of cinema, a country with a prestigious history and tradition, one whose current day and creative impulses are a perennial example of vitality,” said Cannes director of film department Christian Juene who noted he has been attending the International Film Festival of India in Goa for several years. “It gives me immense pleasure to invite India as the Guest Country.”
Turkey Dominates Asia Pacific Screen Awards
Turkish writer-director Emin Alper’s debut feature Tepenin Ardi (Beyond the Hill) was named best feature at the sixth Asia Pacific Screen Awards presented Friday night at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in Brisbane. The drama about the conflict between a sharecropper family and nomads also won the Caligari award at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival and screened at Tribeca in April. Turkish writer-director Reis Çelik won best screenplay for Lal gece (Night of Silence) while the achievement in cinematography award went to Touraj Aslani for Bahman Ghobadi’s Fasle Kargadan (Rhino Season), a co-production between Iraqi-Kurdistan and Turkey. Filipino Brillante Ma Mendoza took the directing prize for Sinapupunan (Thy Womb) and its star Nora Aunor was named best actress. Best actor was Choi Min-sik for Korea’s Bumchoiwaui Junjaeng (Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time). Iraq’s In My Mother’s Arms was named best documentary feature and Japan’s Momo e no tegami (A Letter to Momo) was best animated feature. The UNESCO award for outstanding contribution to the promotion and preservation of cultural diversity through film went to director Wei Te-sheng and producers John Woo, Terence Chang and Jimmy Huang for their Taiwanese film Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale. The awards are an initiative of the Queensland Government , endorsed by UNESCO and in collaboration with the International Federation of Film Producers Associations.
