‘Game Of Thrones’ Shatters Emmy Record For Wins In A Year – Update
UPDATE with later wins:Game Of Thrones, the HBO drama based on George R. R. Martin’s
books, made some history at the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards. With its win for David Nutter in the Best Directing Drama category, the period drama reached 12 Emmys this year – the most any series has won in a single year.
It later won the Supporting Actor Drama with Peter Dinklage and then took the marquee Drama Series prize to wrap up the night. Overall, The show took home 12 Emmys total including eight last week at the Creative Arts Emmys. That is three more wins overall than previous record holder The West Wing, which recorded nine total wins in 2000 also including Drama Series.
Nutter won Sunday for the Season 5 finale Game Of Thrones episode, titled “Mother’s Mercy.”
The blockbuster show tied West Wing‘s record earlier in the night with co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss winning in the Writing for Drama Series category. Game Of Thrones had no lead acting nominees this year, though Lena Headey was up for Best Supporting Actress Drama. The actress, who plays former Queen Cersei Lannister, lost to Orange Is The New Black’s Uzo Aduba.
