‘It Follows’ Expanding to 1,655 Theaters in U.S.

With spring break at its peak, Radius-TWC is expanding micro-budget horror film “It Follows” by adding 437 locations for a total of 1,655 theaters.

This is the third consecutive expansion for “It Follows,” which launched March 13 in four theaters and grossed an impressive $160,089 in its first weekend — causing Radius to pull the plug on plans for a March 27 DVD/VOD release.

The movie expanded to 32 locations for its second weekend, grossing $344,874 and finishing 19th on the box office chart. It moved into 1,215 sites last weekend for a $3.8 million gross in fifth place with a $4.5 million cume.

Radius said that the film, directed by David Robert Mitchell from his own script, has strong word-of-mouth and a 95% “fresh” rating on the Rotten Tomatoes site.

Maika Monroe stars in “It Follows” as a 19-year-old who finds herself plagued by nightmarish visions after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter — leaving her unable to shake the sensation that someone (or something) is following her. Keir Gilchrist, Daniel Zovatto and Jake Weary also star.

“It Follows” should eclipse “20 Feet From Stardom” at $4.9 million as the top Radius grosser on Tuesday following a $366,955 gross for Monday.

“Furious 7″ should dominate the weekend box office with a projected $115 million opening.
