New Distribbery LevelFilm Launches With Deal For Chen Kaige’s ‘Caught In The Web’

ThinkFilm vets David Hudakoc and Michael Baker have launched levelFILM, an indie distribution company that gets off the ground with a deal for North American rights to the Chen Kaige-directed Caught In The Web. Baker and Hudakoc will make the acquisitions for a company that plans to distribute ten to twelve titles per year, both theatricals and multi-platform.

“It’s an exciting time to be in this business”, commented Hudakoc, who is Managing Partner and will oversee distribution and marketing for levelFILM. “The market changes so quickly and continuously that we see an opportunity for an experienced, nimble and quick-to-act partner to provide producers and rights holders with quality execution to bring their films to audiences across all platforms.”

Said Baker: “ThinkFilm afforded both Dave and I a tremendous amount of experience and allowed us to work on an incredible number of outstanding films,” added Baker. “We are confident in the opportunity that now exists to leverage traditional tactics with the advantages of new digital partners and bring a great story to a broader audience in this market, starting with Caught in the Web.”

Hudakoc spent the last four years at Alliance Films directing sales and marketing for their home entertainment division. He previously oversaw North American theatrical marketing at Phase 4 Films, as well as Home Entertainment marketing at ThinkFilm. Baker, who was veep of acquisitions and development for ThinkFilm, also consulted on acquisitions for eOne Films, as well as produced a number of films, including Sacrifice. He continues to operate the indie production arm Bunk 11 Pictures, which he started in 2008.

Caught In The Web focuses on a young woman who learns she is terminally ill and who is caught on video mistreating an elderly bus passenger. She quickly becomes the victim of a massive viral internet campaign, with her life, and the lives of everyone around her, slipping into chaos and media scrutiny. The film stars Yuanyuan Gao, Chen Yao, Mark Chao, Hong Chen and Xueqi Wang, and was written by Chen Kaige and Danian Tang.
