‘Despicable Me 3’ Trailer: Gru Battles An ’80s Relic Bent On Rad Mayhem, Dude

“That’s no monster — that’s a man wearing shoulder pads! There’s only one supervillain whose fashion sense is quite that dated.” Yes, it’s Balthazar Bratt, brought to you by the voice of South Park‘s Trey Parker. And he’s bubblegumming his way into an ’80s-themed heist for the ages. But not if the superagent duo known as Grucy has anything to say about it — you know, a mashed-up Gru and Lucy (Steve Carell and Kristin Wiig).

Welcome to the first trailer for Despicable Me 3, the — you guessed it — third film in the multibillion-dollar franchise from Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures, most recently sort of represented by the billion-dollar 2015 spinoff Minions. This one has those screaming yellow zonkers, for sure, but the trailer focuses on the superdupervillain-turned-good guy Gru and his moonwalking, mulleted archnemesis — a former child star who’s grown up to become obsessed with the character he played during the Reagan years. Their “dance fight,” set to Michael Jackson’s “Bad” conjures images of the erstwhile King of Pop’s video for “Beat It.” And no one wants to be defeated.

Kyle Balda and Pierre Coffin directed the toon, with co-helmer Eric Guillon, and Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul wrote it. Universal unleashes the mayhem from producers Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy on on June 30. Have a gander at the trailer and tell us what you think.
