Dennis Hopper's Unreleased Final Film Raises Nearly $100K on Kickstarter

Dennis Hopper's final film may see the light of day thanks to a Kickstarter campaign.

As of Tuesday, fans had pledged more than $90,000 towards The Last Film Festival, a comedy that stars the late actor as a Hollywood producer whose latest flop has been rejected by every film festival except the one in the small town of O'Hi. Chris Kattan, Katrina Bowden and Jacqueline Bisset co-star.

In a lengthy post on the Kickstarter campaign page, writer/director/producer Linda Yellen outlines the genesis of the project, which began when she met Hopper at the Sundance Film Festival several years ago and pitched him the idea. "Dennis turned to me and said, 'That's a great idea kid, you write the script and I'll do it,'" Yellen writes. "And he did!"

"Filming on the picture came to a halt almost five years ago when Dennis tragically died at age 74 from cancer," she writes. "He was just a few scenes short of completing work on the film, and had already seen a rough cut and loved it. The grief we felt, paired with certain creative and financial issues that remained unsolved with his passing, prompted us to put completion of the project on hold."

Yellen says she hopes to release the movie in May, to mark the fifth anniversary of Hopper's death. The creators are turning to Kickstarter to cover post-production and distribution costs, because other outside investors have made editorial demands that they feel would alter the film too much.

"We want everyone to see the same film that Dennis and I envisioned and hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed making it," Yellen writes.

Though she set an initial goal of $90,000, the campaign had raised about $90,600 as of March 31 and will continue to raise funds until April 9.
