Daytime Emmy Awards Return To TV With Multi-Year Deal At Pop

After decades as a staple on the Big 4 broadcast networks, the Daytime Emmy Awards went to the CW and, after two consecutive airings on HLN, dropped off TV completely last year when it was only broadcast online.

Now the 24-year-old telecast is back on TV through a multi-year deal between the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and Pop (formerly TVGN and TV Guide Network). It starts with the 42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, which will be broadcast live across the country on Sunday, April 26 at 8 PM. The Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Awards gala will take place two days earlier, April 24 at the Universal Hilton in Los Angeles.

This marks the first time the Daytime Emmys have been held in April (they have taken place in May or June). The goal was to make all daytime players more easily available to attend while the shows are still in production. The Daytime Emmys also are making a debut in a new home, — stage 16 of Warner Bros. Studios lot as organizers were looking to get away from the ballroom setting into a place, like a soundstage, where all participants would feel comfortable. Michael Levitt, who originated the TV Land Awards, is executive producing.

Bob Mauro said that returning the Daytime Emmys to their former glory was a main priority when he took over NATAS as new president in November. “Our new partnership with the Pop network is an ideal platform to present our signature gala,” he said.

Daytime TV has a strong presence on Pop, which is airing same-day repeats of CBS’ daytime dramas to solid ratings. Additionally, Pop’s other co-owner, Lionsgate, is behind several daytime programs, including The Wendy Williams Show.

“As a network that celebrates talent, we are thrilled to bring the Daytime Emmy Awards back to television for the fans,” said Brad Schwartz, President of Pop. “Adding premium live events to our schedule is just another exciting way we are building Pop. We’re going to have a lot of fun with this.”

The Daytime Emmys is expanding Pop’s live TV footprint, which also includes ET-branded red carpet coverage.
