‘Concrete Clouds,’ ‘Teacher’s Diary’ Dominate Thailand’s Subhanahongsa Awards
Honors at Thailand’s annual film prize pageant, the Subhanahongsa Awards were split between “Teacher’s Diary” and “Concrete Clouds.”
“Teacher’s Diary,” which was released this time last year and had been Thailand’s unsuccessful foreign-language Oscar contender, collected six awards on the night, ranging from best art direction to best cinematography.
But editor turned director Lee Chatametikool took the glory, collecting best director and best film awards with his festival favourite “Concrete Clouds.”
The film is the story of two brothers brought back together after the economic crisis-induced suicide of their father. It had its premiere back in October 2013 at the Busan festival and boasts a stellar pedigree of Asian art house talent – including Palme d’Or winner Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Sylvia Chang, Soros Sukhum, Anocha Suwichakornpong and Yonfan as its producers.
“Teacher’s Diary,” directed by Nithiwat Tharatorn, is a story about a former wrestler who takes up an unusual position as a class teacher in an isolated rural spot. There he draws inspiration from the diary left behind by a particularly dedicated predecessor. “Diary” was produced by Jorkwang Films and released by local major GMM Tai Hub on March 20, 2014.
