‘Captain America’ Conquers DVD, Blu-ray Disc Sales Charts

“Captain America: Civil War,” the latest Marvel Studios superhero blockbuster, shot straight to the top of both national home video sales charts upon its release last week.

The third “Captain America” film rode its $408.1 domestic theatrical gross to a No. 1 debut on both NPD VideoScan’s overall disc sales chart and dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart for the week ended Sept. 18.

The 13th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe line is one of those rare sequels with a bigger theatrical take than either of its two predecessors. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier: (2014) earned $260 million, while the original 2011 “Captain America: The First Avenger” made $177 million.

The horror sequel “The Conjuring 2,” from Warner, debuted at a distant No. 2 on the overall disc sales chart, selling just 10% as many copies as “Captain America.”

Walt Disney’s live-action “The Jungle Book” remake, at the top of both charts the two previous two weeks, dropped to No. 3 on the overall disc sales chart but came in at No. 2 on the Blu-ray Disc chart, where “Conjuring 2” finished third.

On both charts, Lionsgate’s “Now You See Me 2,” an action adventure sequel with an ensemble cast that includes Michael Caine, Daniel Radcliffe, Woody Harrelson and Morgan Freeman, came in at No. 4, with the ninth season of popular TV sitcom “The Big Bang Theory” debuting at No. 5.

NPD research shows that “Captain America” generated 70% of its total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc, compared to 41% for “Conjuring 2.”

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, “Now You See Me 2” remained at No. 1 for the second consecutive week, with “The Jungle Book” moving up a notch to No. 2 – and bumping “Money Monster,” in second place last week, down to No. 3.

“Captain America” debuted at No. 4, while the Lionsgate actioner “The Marauders” bowed at No. 5. A crime thriller starring Bruce Willis, “Marauders” was released July 1 by Lionsgate Premiere, a specialty division that releases films on multiple platforms, including VOD and streaming. The film debuted at No. 15 on the overall disc sales chart.
