Box Office: ‘Spider-Man 2′ Swings Into Action O’seas With $5.5 Mil

Slinging its web to a few overseas territories early, Sony’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ grossed nearly $5.5 million in opening day from four markets, the largest of which is the U.K., which contributed $2.7 million.

In each of the debut territories, “Spider-Man 2″ scored the largest single opening-day gross this year, according to Sony. In Australia, the film grossed $1.7 million, followed by Germany with $1.1 million (both territories bowed the pic on Thursday), with Belgium grossing $190,000 on Wednesday.

The sequel, which expands to 15 total international territories this weekend, bows May 2 Stateside. The nearly month-early overseas rollout was designed to give the film — a hugely important title for Sony — more breathing room before the World Cup and the onslaught of later summer franchise titles.
