OPENING: That Awkward Moment (FOCUS) took third as Frozen skated around it Super Bowl Sunday; Labor Day (PAR) soft in seventh place. NOTEWORTHY: Ride Along (UNI) is No. 1 for third weekend in a row while the studio’s Lone Survivor, crossed $100M. The Nut Job now has a total cume of $49.9M and American Hustle becomes director David O. Russell‘s biggest grosser to date with a total cume: $133.4M.

4TH UPDATE, 1:15 PM: Frozenin its 11th weekend out of the box, ended up taking the No. 2 spot over the Zac Efron comedy That Awkward Moment, which had the most heat from the 12- to 16 year-olds interested in seeing it, however, it was an R-rated film. Brilliant marketing move by Disney to coax family audiences back in with a sing-a-long version of Frozen. This picture won’t stop playing, despite the fact that another animated family film, The Nut Job, also went into the market three weeks ago (it’s No. 4). All films were down just a smidgen from yesterday’s estimates. Here’s the top 20:

3RD UPDATE, 7:52 AM: Ride Along wins the weekend, as expected, but the No. 2 spot is at issue. Will the position go to That Awkward Moment or will Frozen skate by it? Most believe that Awkward Moment will nab second, but there are some thinking that the Sing-A-Long version of Frozen will get the bump it needs on Super Bowl weekend to sail past it. The $50-M crosser The Nut Job and the $100M Lone Survivor are vying for the four-spot this morning while I, Frankenstein looked to take a step up over The Wolf of Wall Street, but that is yet to be determined as well. As Americans hunker down in front of the TV to watch the Broncos vs. Seahawks, in the background there is a competition playing out on the big screen. The final numbers come in tomorrow. One thing for certain, the animated family film had a terrific hold over the weekend due to Disney’s marketing acumen. Frozen  also won five Annie Awards over the weekend, including Best Feature. Worldwide, the picture is red hot with a total estimated take to date of $864.4M. As that plays out, American Hustle does become David O. Russell’s highest grosser to date, as predicted by its distributor Sony on Friday, surpassing last year’s Silver Linings Playbook.

2ND UPDATE, 7 AM: Grosses this morning revised both upwards and downwards. Opener Labor Day dropped a spot and the 9-10 spots are clear this morning. As always, as more studio numbers arrive this AM, the chart below will be updated accordingly to reflect the best estimates we can give you. (UPDATE, 8:30 AM: Enough estimates are in to figure percentages decreases weekend to weekend now.) Universal has two things to celebrate this Super Bowl weekend: Ride Along still at No. 1 three weeks in a row, and Lone Survivor (Emmett/Furla) passes $100M.

PREVIOUS, FRIDAY 11:40 PM: Three time’s a charm for Universal’s buddy pic Ride Along which is cruising in the No. 1 spot yet again with an estimated $11.5M to $11.8M weekend (based on early Friday estimates). Newcomer That Awkward Moment is in the No. 2 spot right behind it with maybe $10.8M. Frozen, which debuts its sing-a-long version on 2,057 of its play dates, looks to take third place this weekend to pull in yet another $8.9M for Disney as the picture is the holiday gift that just doesn’t stop giving. It’s in its 11th week. Crazy good for everyone except those bleary-eyed parents who are going to be dragged into the theaters for the third consecutive time after a long work week to be serenaded by 100 screaming children. Fourth and fifth place will go to Open Road’s The Nut Job and Lone Survivor, respectively. Lone Survivor passed the $100M mark for Universal and Emmett Furla. Congrats! The Virgin-produced, Focus Features distributed That Awkward Moment which stars Zac Efron is tracking the highest for girls 12 to 16-years old, but the movie is … um, rated R. Awkward. Efron still delivers an audience on a consistent basis. He stars with Michael B. Jordan coming off critical acclaim for Fruitvale Station and Miles Teller who starred in the red hot Sundance winner Whiplash. American Hustle should top last year’s Oscar contender Silver Linings Playbook this weekend for a total cume of $133.5M to become director David O. Russell’s highest domestic grosser movie yet. It’s Super Bowl weekend so expect to see a little jump in family-oriented films and moviegoing will be down a little bit on Sunday night. Here’s what it looks like Saturday morning:
