Benjamin Bratt Joins Bold Films’ ‘Shot Caller’ & Netflix’s ‘Special Correspondent’

Benjamin Bratt has lined up a pair projects — one for Netflix and the other for Bold Films/Participant/Relativity. First, Bratt has been cast in Ricky Gervais’ satirical comedy Special Correspondent about a New York based radio journalist (Eric Bana) whose arrogance and decadent lifestyle has hindered his career. With his job on the line, he fakes frontline war reports from the comfort of his hideout above a Spanish restaurant in the heart of Manhattan. Bratt will portray Bana’s nemesis — a TV anchor — in the Netflix s comedy, which was written and is being directed by Gervais. The project is scheduled to air in 2016. Next year also will see the actor appear opposite Ice Cube and Kevin Hart in the sequel Ride Along 2.

Bratt, who has worked in film, TV and voice-over, also was just cast in Shot Caller, which reunites him with his Snitch director (and co-writer) Ric Roman Waugh. The actor will star as Sanchez, a member of the L.A. County Sheriff’s Gang unit who is determined to make a career bust. He tracks a newly released prison gangster forced by gang leaders to orchestrate a major crime with a rival gang on Southern California streets. Shot Caller is being financed by Bold Films, Participant and distributed by Relativity. It started shooting this week in New Mexico. Bratt joins Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lake Bell and Jon Bernthal in the action drama.

Bold’s Michel Litvak and Matthew Rhodes will serve as producers on Shot Caller along with Waugh and Participant Media’s Jonathan King, who developed the project. Bold’s Gary Michael Walters will executive produce with Participant’s Jeff Skoll.

For Netflix’s Special Correspondent, Bron Studios and Unanimous Entertainment are producing with Gervais, Unanimous’ Chris Coen, Bron’s Aaron L. Gilbert, Manuel Munz and Larry Sanitsky.

Bratt most recently filmed The Infiltrator starring with Bryan Cranston. He also voiced the villain Eduardo in Universal’s worldwide smash Despicable Me 2 and Manny in the Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs films. He also recently starred and produced the A&E drama series The Cleaner for A&E and starred in the limited event series 24: Live Another Day on Fox Bratt also recurs as Sofia Vergara’s ex-husband on Modern Family. He is repped by WME, Circle of Confusion and attorney Bob Myman.
