Belgium’s Umedia Launches Canada’s VFX Studio

Belgian film powerhouse Umedia is expanding its geographical footprint in Canada with the launch of a visual effects and finishing studio in Vancouver to bolster its presence in the post-production landscape in North America.

The Vancouver facility, which will be Umedia’s fifth office, will focus on film and television development, production and financing in London, Los Angeles, Brussels and Paris. Umedia already has VFX studios in Brussels and Paris.

“I am delighted to welcome Umedia Vancouver to the family,” said Umedia founder Adrian Politowski. “The world-renowned quality of Vancouver’s VFX and finishing artists, combined with an attractive tax incentive program, made the city an obvious choice.”

Umedia tapped Peter Muyzers, the Oscar-winning industry vet whose credits include “Elysium,” “American Sniper,” “District 9,” “Corpse Bride,” the “Harry Potter” series and “Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.” Muyzers (pictured above with Politowski) previously worked as COO of Imagine Engine, where he spearheaded the creation of the company’s film division.

“From on-set supervision to finishing and delivery, Umedia Vancouver offers an integrated approach for filmmakers,” said Muyzers. “We work closely with clients to bring their creative visions to life—on time. Between the talented team we have assembled and Umedia’s significant investment, we look forward to becoming a leader in Vancouver’s thriving post-production and VFX industry.”

Umedia’s VFX team recently worked on “What Happened to Monday,” Netflix’s French show “Marseille.” The company is also behind “I Kill Giants,” which will soon start shooting with Zoe Saldana and is being produced with Chris Columbus’s 1492 Pictures.
