Battlestar Galactica Movie In Development

It looks as though ‘Battlestar Galactica’ is heading to the big screen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the classic TV sci-fi series could be getting a big screen revival… with a view to building an entire franchise.

“Battlestar Galactica is getting another shot at the big-screen,” they revealed. “Producer Michael De Luca is teaming up with Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark of Bluegrass Films to produce the movie for Universal, which is hoping to launch a massive event franchise.”

‘Battlestar Galactica’ was originally a short-lived sci-fi TV series created by Glen A. Larson way back in 1978. But while it may have only run until 1979, it left a pretty huge impact.

“The hook of the show concerned human civilization on distant planets being almost wiped out by intelligent machines known as Cylons,” explain THR. “The survivors flee on starships, and led by the Galactica and her heroic crew, try to find a mythic human colony called Earth.”

In fact, the series was eventually rebooted in 2004 for a more modern audience.

Since then, we’ve even seen ‘Battlestar’ get a spin-off in the form of ‘Caprica’… but while a ‘Battlestar Galactica’ movie was thought to be on the cards, it never made it into production, despite ‘X-Men’ director Bryan Singer being involved with the project.

What can we expect from the new ‘Battlestar Galactica’ movie?

At the moment, very little is known about the project… but while the recent TV reboot may have proved popular, it’s thought that the new movie will spawn a new franchise of its own.

But will it take a more retro approach?

Considering the huge success of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, it’s likely that whoever takes the helm of the ‘Battlestar Galactica’ movie will be hoping to recreate the success of the original series.

Whether that means leaning on the 1978 plot or taking a more modern approach like the 2004 reboot, remains to be seen.

Either way, it looks as though ‘Battlestar Galactica’ is making a comeback.
