‘Allegiant’ Debuts Atop Disc Sales Charts

Lionsgate’s “Allegiant,” the third installment of the studio’s teen-centric sci-fi “Divergent Series,” debuted at No. 1 on the NPD VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart the week ended July 17.

The film’s solid home video performance follows an underwhelming box office run that saw it take in just $66.2 million at U.S. theaters, about half the tally of its predecessor, “Insurgent.” The final installment of the franchise will skip theaters and head to TV, as Variety first reported Wednesday.

Sony Pictures’ faith-based “Miracles From Heaven” also enjoyed a healthy home video bow, taking No. 2 in the wake of a $61.7 million domestic box office run, selling 60% as many units as “Allegiant.”

Disney’s “Zootopia” continued to perform well on disc, taking No. 3 in its sixth week, while DreamWorks Animation’s Fox-distributed “Kung Fu Panda 3,” which had been No. 1 the previous two weeks, dropped to No. 4.

The top four were the same on both the overall and Blu-ray charts. No. 5 overall was Fox’s “Deadpool” in its 10th week, which was No. 6 on the Blu-ray chart. The No. 5 Blu-ray was Warner’s “The Lord of the Rings Trilogy,” which landed at No. 12 on the overall chart.

Sony Pictures’ 1984 “Ghostbusters” moved up to No. 6 overall, spurred by the theatrical release of its remake.

For “Allegiant,” 54% of its total sales were of the Blu-ray Disc format, compared with 27% for “Miracles From Heaven.”

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, “Allegiant” was also No. 1, since Lionsgate doesn’t delay its new releases from Redbox kiosks.

Universal’s “London Has Fallen,” coming off such a holdback, moved up to No. 2. “Miracles From Heaven” debuted at No. 3, while “Kung Fu Panda 3” landed at No. 4 after just a three-week delay to rental markets. “Zootopia” rounded out the top five.
