‘Into The Abyss’ Is The Projector’s Movie of the Week

Every week, The Projector gives you our Movie of the Week, the one film that we agree you should run out and see before any other this weekend. We'll recommend a movie, with links to great interviews, our own writings and where you can get tickets. We're not afraid to be service-y!

So, this week's pick is "Into The Abyss," Werner Herzog's deeply sad look at a triple murder in a small Texas town and all the lives it destroys, for years to come, and forever. If you've grown tired of Herzog's recent public prevalence, don't worry: This is restrained, philosophic, "Grizzly Man"-level Herzog. It is quite possibly his best film, and definitely his most emotionally draining. So go see it. Here's all you need to know, and how to make that happen:

The Projector Movie Pick of the Week: "Into The Abyss."
Director: Werner Herzog.
Quote From Our Review: "Herzog, for once, finds himself less concerned with the Larger Themes of the Universe and simply concentrates on the devastating details at hand. It, of course, ends up being the most profound film he's ever made."
Quote From Another Critic You Respect: Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times. "In some of [Herzog's] films he freely shares his philosophy and insights. In this film, he simply looks. He always seems to know where to look."
Quote From Smart Interview With the Director: "I'm a filmmaker and I'm a storyteller. I have my focus and I pursue things. I want to look deep into human beings, otherwise I would end up with 300 hours of mediocre footage, all small talk. I'm not into that. I'm not a surveillance camera in Wal-Mart, absent and unobtrusive, less than the fly on the wall. No, I'm a filmmaker. And I accept my duties as a filmmaker. And in a way, I'm good at what I'm doing."
Metacritic Rating: 85.
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 90.
Clips: Right here.
Where It's Playing: It'll play on 12 screens this weekend, in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago. It briefly will expand before playing on the Investigation Discovery channel next month. Get tickets here.

So, what are you waiting for, people? Go see it! (If and when it's in your city!)
