Weekend Picks: ‘The Watch’ & ‘Step Up: Revolution’

When it comes to box office results for this upcoming weekend, "The Dark Knight Rises" is expected to easily reign again.

New widely-released films coming to theaters are thankfully light -- comedy "The Watch" and dance film "Step Up: Revolution."

If you're looking to escape -- and I think a lot of us are who have been watching the news -- this weekend's new fare could be just the answer.

Here is more of what you can expect from this weekend's new movies:

The Watch
The Watch

The Watch

Rated R for some strong sexual content including references, pervasive language and violent images.

What's the Story?

Starring Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill, Vince Vaughn and British television star Richard Ayoade, "The Watch" pokes fun at oppressive, masculinity-robbing suburban culture. As a way of letting loose and reclaiming their manhood, the guys ban together to regulate the 'hood. Along the way they discover something really strange -- and dangerous -- infiltrating their surroundings, and they are the only ones who can stop it.

Who Will Dig It?

Dudes. Dudes who like to do dude-like things (like pee in weird places). Dudes who are dads. Dudes who fantasize about saving their family and the world from an alien invasion.

Step Up: Revolution

Rated PG-13 for some suggestive dancing and language.

What's the Story?

Ever wonder what the Occupy movement would look like if it added some choreography? In the fourth installment of the popular dance series, a flash mobbin' group of performance artists take to the streets to protest a wealthy developer's destructive plans. Along the way, two dancers fall in love and also risk their future plans for a greater cause.

Who Will Dig It?

Perfect your double dream hands for this one: Flash mob dance fans and summer lovin' lovers have something to dig their heels into. The "Step Up" series is essentially our era's "Grease," with the same elements of dance and romance. "Revolution," starring Ryan Guzman and Kathryn McCormick, also incorporates ever-popular flock-dance craze flash mob numbers.

In Limited Release

There are a few films in limited release this weekend: artist biographical documentary "Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry," film festival darling "Falling Overnight," and a few more. Shock comedy "Klown," however, seems to be getting the most buzz. As our own Jonathan Crow wrote, the Danish film is "the most perversely funny flick of the year... about two friends named Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen, who go on the worst canoeing trip this side of 'Deliverance.'" Read about Crow's "Deliverance"-like boat adventure that precedes his interview with the film's comedian stars.
