Shailene Woodley may become a bonafide A-lister as the true star of "Divergent" when it comes out, but it's the stoic and scary Kate Winslet who steals the show in the first look footage that premiered during the MTV Video Music Awards pre-show on Sunday.
But before we get to that, we have to learn the definition of a "divergent" in this dystopian world created by author Veronica Roth. Thankfully, Maggie Q – who will be kicking butt as aptitude test instructor Tori – is on hand to spell it out to us and our heroine, Tris, played by Woodley.
"You're different. You don't fit into a category. They can't control you," she explains. "They call it 'divergent.' You can't let them find out about you."
The categories she refers to are the five "factions" that divide the society based on a virtue of humanity: Abnegation (selflessness), Amity (peace), Candor (honesty), Dauntless (bravery) and Erudite (intelligence). Tris, who was born into Abnegation, shows an aptitude for three, thus making her Divergent … and at risk of being killed.
"The system removes the threat of anyone exercising their independent will," we hear in Winslet's chilling voice over. "Divergents threaten that system. It won't be safe until they're removed."
Yikes! That sounds frightening, like a genocide plot. Could Winslet really be so villainous? We've seen her cheat on husbands and conspire to kill a parent, but we've never witnessed the Oscar winner quite so diabolical.
And, we have to say, it's an exciting next move for the former "Mildred Pierce."
"Divergent" arrives in theaters on March 21, 2014. The third and final novel in Roth's bestselling series, "Allegiant," hits bookshelves on October 22, 2013.
