That question is answered during a very revealing behind-the-scenes moment in the Blu-ray/DVD extras section of "This Is 40."

While filming a love scene, director Judd Apatow can be heard coaching his wife, Leslie Mann, on how to better satisfy her onscreen husband, played by Paul Rudd.

"This isn't awkward!" quips Rudd.

But does guiding his real-life spouse through sexy time with another man ever get uncomfortable for Apatow? "It doesn't. I feel like I'm pulling a prank," he told Yahoo! Movies. "As long as they're both far from arousal, I don't care. It's just for a laugh."

As in "Knocked Up," which "This Is 40" serves as "somewhat sequel," Apatow directs the performances of all of his immediate family members, from Mann, his wife of 15-plus years, to their two daughters, Maude and Iris.

And they have much more screen time this time around as his older daughter, Maude, steals more scenes. He wouldn't have it any other way. "I know them better than I know anyone else in the world, so I can explore things more deeply," he explained. "I like them more than I like anybody else, so I get to be around them, and I shoot near my house."

From Megan Fox to John Lithgow to Charlyne Yi to Jason Segel to Melissa McCarthy (and more), there are a slew of small-but-memorable appearances in "This Is 40," which runs 40 whole minutes longer than "Anchorman." And judging from the DVD extras, even more material hit the cutting-room floor. "I shoot my movies a little bit like a documentary," Apatow said. He explained he feels compelled to capture more than needed because "I never trust what I'm going to shoot is going to work." Then he made a funny: "I don't think, 'Oh! I'm longer than "Austin Powers."' I think, 'I'm 35 minutes shorter than "The Hobbit"!'"

"This Is 40" is available now on Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy/UltraViolet.
