Jim Jarmusch has a long history of up-ending traditional genre conventions with his cool, downbeat directorial style – road movies in “Stranger Than Paradise,” buddy flicks in “Down By Law,” westerns in “Dead Man,” and martial arts epics in “Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai.” So if Jarmusch was going to make a horror movie, it makes sense that he’d do it his own way, and the first image from his upcoming vampire tale “Only Lovers Left Alive” looks just as cool and sinister as you’d expect.

“Only Lovers Left Alive” stars Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton as Adam and Eve; he’s a musician and she’s his paramour. Adam and Eve also happen to be vampires who have been traveling together for a few centuries, and the longer they live among humans, the more Adam becomes disenchanted with the ways of the living. Matters become all the more complicated when Eve’s unstable sister Ada (Mia Wasikowska) arrives to make trouble for the couple.

In the first still from “Only Lovers Left Alive” -- posted by Indiewire -- Swinton and Hiddleston certainly make for a stylish pair of bloodsuckers. She’s wearing a pale beige dress that flatters her flowing blonde hair while sporting a pair of hipster shades, and he cuts a Dylan-esque figure in a dark jacket with just enough rumple, slightly shaggy dark hair, and vintage sunglasses. He holds her close, while she looks glamorous but just the slightest bit indifferent. The fact they’re both wearing dark glasses inside what appears to be a dank but fashionable nightclub suggests they want to avoid the light while looking fabulous doing it, and if this is at all typical of the film’s visual style and tone, Jarmusch may make vampires hip again after the sparkly night creatures of “Twilight” turned them into fare for lovesick adolescents.
