Ugh, here we go again. Kathryn Bigelow has too much class to shoot off a rocket launcher at the Academy, but I'm mad as hell and I'm going to mouth off in her place. AMPAS nominated five men for best director: Steven Spielberg ("Lincoln"), Ang Lee ("Life of Pi"), Michael Haneke ("Amour"), David O. Russell ("Silver Linings Playbook") and Benh Zeitlin ("Beasts of the Southern Wild"). And, then, no Kathryn Bigelow for "Zero Dark Thirty." How very dare they?

Sure, Bigelow won two years ago for "The Hurt Locker." "Zero Dark Thirty" is not just equally good, but even better and more ambitious. And it has a female CIA agent, played by Jessica Chastain, driving the plot. And if you compare her taut, tense, intellectual thriller with Benh Zeitlin's first-time effort, "Beasts of the Southern Wild," or Ang Lee's instantly forgettable "Life of Pi," it's unimaginable that she didn't make the gang of five directors with nominations.

Kathryn, I have your back. "Zero Dark Thirty" is my favorite film of 2012. It's back to the boys club, and I'm not going to take it quietly.
