You can count on the Golden Globes to deliver a few surprises every year, from a breakout star beating out the surefire favorite for a best actress award to a cringe-worthy “Did he really just say that?” joke. But this year, one presenter took the cake for best (and biggest!) surprise of the show – President Bill Clinton.

The former president walked on stage to a stunned crowd full of celebs and showbiz insiders, all of whom quickly jumped to their feet to give him a standing ovation. Clinton was there to introduce Steven Spielberg’s film “Lincoln,” one of the best picture nominees.

According to sources omg! spoke with at the ceremony, DreamWorks, the studio behind the film, coordinated the president’s appearance with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a visit that had apparently been weeks in the planning. But it seems it wasn’t just DreamWorks, but Spielberg himself who got Clinton to agree to appear, according to Deadline.com.

“We had this on lockdown,” DreamWorks co-chair and CEO Stacey Snider told the site, adding that only a select few knew about the appearance and were told to tell others (if asked) that the evening’s special presenter was slated to be Prince Albert of Monaco.

Though Clinton was only in the building for about two minutes, just long enough to walk on stage, make his speech, and exit, he came with a full-on presidential security detail, including his very own sniper team, who were stationed atop the Beverly Hilton. However, security checks for those attending the event seemed pretty status quo with every car entering the hotel grounds subject to inspection as per usual. One giveaway? A mobile FBI truck was spotted nearby.

Most of the crowd may not have known about the guys on the roof with guns, but what mattered to the audience was the 42nd president being his usual, charming self. While explaining Lincoln’s fight to get slavery outlawed by the U.S. government, Clinton explained that, “Winning it required the president to make a lot of unsavory deals that had nothing to do with the big issue — I wouldn’t know anything about that,” followed by laughter from the crowd.

Co-host Amy Poehler, however, may have gotten the last laugh. "Wow, what an exciting special guest,” she said after the president left the stage. “That was Hillary Clinton's husband!"
