What's The Story
It's just another day for New York City subway dispatcher Walter Garber, until Ryder, a bitter ex-con, hijacks one of the trains. Unless the city pays Ryder one million dollars within the hour for each hostage on the train, he and his four armed accomplices will execute them all. The mystery is: where does Ryder plan to go once he gets the money? Garber finds himself in an unlikely position of power, since he is the only one who knows the subway system well enough to foil Ryder's plans.
Three Good Reasons
- 1Screen legends John Travolta (Ryder) and Denzel Washington (Garber) are in a film together for the first time, promising an explosive confrontation.
- 2On the other hand, Denzel Washington has plenty of experience working with director Tony Scott (Top Gun), who has coaxed the best from him in Man on Fire, Deja Vu, and of course, Crimson Tide.
- 3It's not summer without action, and this pulse-pounding tale delivers. The original novel was turned into an award-winning 1974 movie, and was reimagined again for television in 1998.
Bet You Didn't Know
In the 1974 version, the Pelham hijackers had color names like "Mr. Blue," an idea that showed up again in Quentin Tarantino's
Reservoir Dogs. Tony Scott had wanted to direct
Reservoir Dogs, but was given
True Romance instead.
