One of the best around, classic movies on Saturdays, organ music, friendly staff. They say it's the biggest theatre in the area.

If you want a theater experience in the grand old single screen style this is one of the few places that can deliver. With about 800 seats and a huge balcony, it is a large theater. My family has gone to the movies at the Lafayette many times and always enjoyed it. We especially enjoy the matinees on Saturdays when that great old organ is played for 30 minutes or so before the show and sometimes they even run the bubble machine for the kids. We rarely buy at the concession counter and so have not had a problem. I agree it is a shame when a manager makes a scene like the one described and I probably wouldn't go back if I encountered it. But there are so few of these noble old theaters left that it would be a shame if it closed. Also the digital sound and up to date projector make a great experience. The seats are not as comfortable as they might be, but not that bad and there is good leg room. Another plus is that we enjoy the town. There are lots of good restaurants nearby (especially Mexican) and the train station is nearby also. I would have given it 5 stars if the maintenance of the theater was a little better.

I don't EVER write reviews, but having stumbled across the previous review, I felt so strongly about echoing what MISS C stated in her review posted 08/11/2008. My 8-year-old son, 9-year old nephew and I went the Lafayette a few months ago and had a run in with the manager. A tall, husky fellow who is so rude and tries to use his loud mouth and what he surely believes his size to intimidate you if you have a disagreement. On this particular day, we entered and paid for our tkts. We went to the popcorn counter and purchased the usual popcorn, sodas and candy (not cheap) when I received the items and attempted to pay with a large bill (the do not accept credit cards) I was told that could not accept it, the theatre was very crowded and did not think that the $100 bill would be a problem so I asked to speak to the manager. When he came up to me I explained the situation, (no CC accepted, all small bills used to purchase the Tkts) and I only have $100 dollar bills left. He stated that there was a sign at the front window stating their policy and why hadn’t I read it, this was stated in a very condescending tone. I stated that I must have missed and that was all I had left. This is where the scene began. He began a controlled tirade loud enough for all to hear, about how if I didn’t have smaller bills it would be too bad and that I was wasting there time ordering the merchandise knowing I only I had a large bill. I pointed out his tone, demeanor and volume and that this could not be a as big a deal as he was making it, since I must have been to the theater 50 x’s since I moved here in 1990, and must have spent $30 in the order I just made. The argument went back and forth, and I believe that it had a more viewers than the movie trailers that had begun. Finally I threatened to leave the theater, and requested my money back, he gave in and changed the bill and rudely told me and the two boys not to come back. I have never returned. I had at least 10 onlookers come up to me after the movie and express their distaste with what they observed the manager and staffs do. Three onlookers stated that would not return to the location and would rather go to the Palisades Mall than possibly be subject to such an incident. I am sure that there are many more stories and incidents like this involving the staff and particularly the manager of the Lafayette Theater. TOO Bad!

WHAT A SHAME! A GORGEOUS OLD THEATRE WASTING AWAY DUE TO TERRIBLE MANAGEMENT. I OFTEN WONDERED WHY THE THEATRE WAS ALWAYS EMPTY. AFTER SPEAKING TO MANY FRIENDS, I REALIZED I WAS NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO FELL "VICTIM" TO RUDE, INEXPERIENCED PERSONNEL SUCH AS THE CURRENT MANAGER. I WOULD RATHER GO TO A CROWDED MALL MOVIE THEN EVER SET FOOT IN A "HOSTILE" ENVIRONMENT SUCH AS THIS ONE- IT'S SAD THAT THE OWNER PROBABLY ISN'T EVEN AWARE OF HOW HIS PRIVATE THEATRE IS BEING RUN!
