I have been going to this theatre since 2007. I have had absolutely no issues. I live very close by so it is extremely convenient and I really like the $5.00 all day movies every Tuesday. There have been a few instances where I have complained about people on their darn cell phones texting or whatever which is very rude by the way and people should know better, and the management have given me a free pass every time. The management are young, but they are not rude. I think that it all comes down to common courtesy and respect.
I often pick out this theater as my choice for a movie that is being shown widely in the area. I find that it is comfortable, there are usually good seats available, and the price is probably lower than some theater. Best of all, it does have free underground parking, so winter or rain storms are no problem! Afterwords, there are many restaurants on the plaze to have a meal. Granted they are not four star and some are awful, but if you pick and choose, you will have a meal that is OK. What would be nice is to see them add some highly rated independent or foreign movies (besides Indian). Fairfax County has a highly educated and cultured population, so I would think the theater would be able to make some money with these types of movies.
Sometimes the sound is set too high, but with that rare exception, it is a nice uncrowded theater which is still maintained fairly well.
I agree - it is not state of the art, but the prices are lower than most, there are almost always seats available opening week for the big movies and the staff is usually responsive. There are, of course, always things that are beyond their control as the person with the diatribe above doesn't seem to understand. There could have been a problem with the projection system or something with the movie itself. Which theatre a movie goes into, etc. are dictated by the head office and the local staff generally can't change any of that. While from the number of people I see leaving the Indian movies, I would agree that they would appear to make a lot of money, they are NOT the only movies there that make money. Again, what theatre the movie goes into is usually generated by their head office. Also, for his complaint about ethnicity/skin color. Did he not look around? Most of the staff are people of color. He needs to calm down or he's going to give himself a heart attack.
Phoenix Theaters Worldgate 9 - One of the worst theaters I have been to. I recently went to watch an India movie (King) (12/25/2008 - 8 pm screening) that was being screened in theater 2. The screening of the show started half an hour after the scheduled time. After the movie had started, I noticed the sound wasn't upto par so I went to talk to theater folks to have them fix it. I was directed to the Manager's room. I knocked on the door a few times but didn't any response. The kid who had directed me to the manager's office, did tell me that the Manager is very lazy and doesn't do what he is supposed to. After a little while, Mgr incharge (Bryan Travelstead) stepped out. I told about the sound issue and he mentioned that the theater doesn't have Dolby Digital. I was shocked at first. I didn't realise that there are only a few theaters at "Phoenix Theaters Worldgate 9" that have it. I mentioned to him that it would have been helpful if i had known earlier. I didn't want to watch a good quality movie in a lousy theater after paying $12. I told him to atleast increase the volume so I can hear some of the dialogues and enjoy the movie. He said he will get it taken care of, so I went back to my seat. After about 5 minutes, I noticed there wasn't any difference and came out to complain about it again. Now, there were a couple of guys talking to the manager complaining to him about the same issue. He said there is nothing he can do. He was very rude to them as he was with me earlier. He does seem to have an attitude issue. His behevior wasn't professional. He is in charge of the theaters there and should take care of customesr. If for the Indian movies, no one would go watch movies in the lousy theaters. I told him I have already complained about it earlier and he hadn't done anything about it. Now I sense he was being discriminatory and condesending. I told him he wasn't treated me right and wanted to speak to his supervisor. He said he is the manager. I told him I knew that and wanted to speak with his boss.I asked for his boss's name and number. He said he can't give the number out but would call him and let me speak to him. But he said he was busy then. He wasn't doing anything but said he was busy. My feeling was his bad treatment of me was because of skin color and/or ethnicity. One of the girls who was working there (Vanessa) also was showing attitude. I asked for their names and they were mocking me. I don't think that is the way you treat customers who have come to watch movies. I know a lot of my Indian brethern go to these theaters to watch Indian movies thinking they have no choice. We need to write honest feedback/reviews so people who screen movies at these theaters read these feedback and take these complaints to the proper authorities and/or take their business elsewhere. I encourage others who have had an issues at these theaters to come forward and give honest feedback so the people who are incharge take stock of the situation and fix these discriminatory behavior of the people who work at these theaters. Granted they are working long hours and are busy because of the Indian movies. Little do these people realize but for screening of the Indian movies, they would be out of jobs. I will be talking to my Lawyer very soon and see if i can file a discrimination lawsuit at the people involved and Management of these theaters for hiring/putting in people who discriminate others for their skin color/ethnicity.
