The Miramax film -- which is adapted from the 1975 hit Broadway musical that was in turn adapted from a 1926 play -- would go on to receive 13 Academy Award nominations and win six Oscars, including Best Actress in a Supporting Role (for Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Best Picture, the first (and last) musical to do so since “Oliver” in 1968. The prohibition period piece also turned out to be Miramax’s highest Box Office earner ever, making more money than crowd-pleasers “Scary Movie” (2000), “Good Will Hunting” (1997), and “Pulp Fiction” (1994).
