Bruce Lee was born Lee Jun Fan on this day in San Francisco, California. Though he appeared regularly on “The Green Hornet” (1966-7) television show as the hero’s sidekick Kato, Lee didn’t achieve substantial fame in the United States until after his untimely and mysterious death, when his Chinese action film “Enter the Dragon” (1973) was released domestically. Though reports of family curses and Chinese mafia involvement still run rampant, officially, Lee died of a brain edema, perhaps in reaction to pain medicine. Lee’s popularity has paved the way for many martial arts stars, yet nearly 40 years after his death, he continues to be the iconic symbol of martial arts entertainment, a genre he seemingly single handedly made popular in America. Prophetically perhaps, Lee once said, "The key to immortality is first living a life worth remembering."
