Nominated for Best Visual Effects, "The Avengers" is, of course, based on the famous Marvel Comics series. In "Avengers Vol. 1 #1", Earth's mightiest superheroes combine forces to stop Loki from carrying out a plot that involves manipulating the Hulk. Sound familiar? At the end of Stan Lee's 1963 comic, Hulk asks Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, and Wasp what they're calling themselves, since he'd rather join forces than go against them. Wasp decides they need a name that's "colorful and dramatic," and her brainstorm starts with the Avengers, which everyone agrees is a great choice. That carried over to the Marvel film series, in which Samuel L. Jackson first mentions the Avengers Initiative at the end of 2008's "Iron Man."
