2006 interview, Cannell said, "We had one script writer who had never even watched the show." It took so long to make the movie that in the first script the characters were updated to be veterans of the first Gulf War, and in the finished film, they fought in the current one. Director John Singleton was attached to the project at one point, and he had said he wanted his "Boyz N the Hood" star Ice Cube to play B.A. Baracus. But when the movie was delayed again, Singleton left and was replaced by Joe Carnahan ("Smokin' Aces").
